What moves the price

The No.2 is a London-pattern sidelock ejector at a fraction of a London price, and the gun the game market has quietly re-rated over the last five years. Values have moved up while most over-and-unders have drifted.

Barrel wall thickness is the whole game. Under 20 thou and the gun is worth a fraction of its apparent value regardless of how it looks. A recent reproof with a measured wall thickness stated in the advert is worth real money, because it removes the buyer's main fear.

Bore size moves the price more than anything else on this model. Our own results show 12-bores at the bottom and small bores well clear of them — a 28-bore made comfortably more than either 12-bore in the same sale. Same maker, same pattern, same room.

Stock dimensions matter more than on an over-and-under, because these are rarely altered sympathetically. An original straight-hand stock in good order, cased, sits at the top; a restocked or shortened gun sits well below however well the work was done.

Retail expectation: £2,400 for a tired gun with thin walls to £4,200 for a cased, reproofed example, from a dealer.
